The Many Uses of Walking Canes

Walking canes are the tool to help people walk by giving great support to your knees and improving your ability to walk all around. A walking cane serves its function well, and there really is no other alternative for it. However, although walking is the main function of a walking cane, it does have other uses it can help accomplish. Here are the many uses of walking canes, other than walking.

Hiking

During a hiking trip, it is not unusual for small obstacles to pop up, such as a low tree branch or some bushes that you need to move out of the way. A walking cane is just the tool to help you do that. Use it to help hold those obstacles back as you walk on by. It can push rocks out of the way and beat back any foliage. After you use it to move an obstacle, it can go right back to helping you walk.

Defense

When you are out walking, there is an increased chance of danger. Sometimes, something dangerous might occur, and you need to be able to defend yourself in a pinch. Now, a walking cane is not meant to be a good tool for defense, but sometimes you just need something to help. With its extra length and weight, plus its hardness, even a wooden walking cane can make for a good defensive tool. However, please note that as a cane is not meant to handle such use, this can lead to damaging your cane.

Extended Reach

On a lighter note, a cane can serve as an extra-long arm in certain circumstances. Whenever something is stuck in a tree or just out of reach, a cane is a very good way to move it. A swift poke can loosen something from a tree, and a sweep of the cane can pull something closer to you.

Now, these are just some of the many uses of walking canes. It can really accomplish any task a large stick can, but better; but do keep in mind that some of these actions can dirty the cane and you should clean it whenever possible.
