Can Canes Be Taken on Airplanes?

Are you looking to travel, but wondering if you might have to leave your favorite cane behind? Fear not! We have answers.

When you're the owner of a fabulously fashionable walking cane for women or a formal cane for men, chances are that no matter what type of cane you use, you carry it proudly. Since you take pride in your unique walking cane, and it likely provides you with comfort and support to assist you in everyday tasks, it's only natural that you want it to go everywhere with you. That's fine if you're traveling by car, train, or bus. But what do you do if you're boarding an airplane?

In the simplest of terms, it's absolutely fine to bring your cane on an airplane. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has special procedures set in place for individuals who use mobility devices, including canes for men and women. All you have to do is inform the TSA officer at the security checkpoint that you can stand independently prior to being screened if you don't actually need your cane for specific support while going through the metal detector.

As you are passing through the security checkpoint, your cane will be run through an X-ray screening for inspection. If for some reason it does not fit through the machine, a TSA officer will inspect it instead. After both you and the cane have passed through security, you'll receive it back.

If your cane is necessary for your functionality and you need it immediately after it goes through an X-ray machine or inspection from an officer, just let the TSA professional know beforehand. Your cane can be screened and returned to you so that you can safely pass through security with the help of your mobility aid.

Bear in mind that canes for men and women aren't considered carry-on luggage- they are simply mobility devices, which means they fit into a category all their own, with other items like crutches and walkers. Most major airlines don't restrict these items.

After You Board

Once you've boarded the plane, a flight attendant can help manage your cane for you. Usually, it will be placed in a closet where coats and garment bags are stored during the flight, and then returned to you before landing. If you need it at any point during the flight, whether you're using the restroom or simply want to get up to stretch your legs, you can make a simple call to the flight attendant. They will have your cane back in your hands in no time

Some custom walking canes for men and women can be stored closer to you. Folding canes for men and women, for example, are usually permissible for storage beneath the passenger seat. As long as the cane isn't jutting out into the aisle or otherwise restricting someone's movements or personal space, it's perfectly fine to do this. Usually, these types of canes are so convenient, portable, and compact that they can also fit quite comfortably into a carry-on bag or even a large purse.

The Midnight Breeze Folding Cane is popular for travel. Its convenient storage capabilities, as well as its tropical design, will have you in the vacation mood long before your plane leaves the runway!

Canes can also be stowed in the overhead compartment if it's not comfortable to place it below the seat. The goal is simply to ensure that your cane doesn't present a security or safety risk at any point during the flight. In the very rare event that there's no room for a cane aboard the flight, it may be stored in cargo. Bear in mind, though, that this is almost never a necessity.

Of course, if you have any doubts about whether it's safe to carry a cane on board a specific airline, it's best to contact the airline beforehand to learn more about their policies for mobility aids. You may simply feel more comfortable informing them of your mobility requirements before boarding the flight so that you can be certain you won't encounter any issues in the airport or when you're in the air.

There are rarely restrictions on personal care items like these, so whether you're the proud owner of a folding walking cane for men or an adjustable walking cane for women, you don't have to worry or think twice, the next time you book a flight.
