Tips for How To Wrap a Walking Stick Handle
Posted by TONY MERS
When you get a new walking stick, you might find that the handle isn’t the easiest to grasp. This is mostly subjective, but there is an easy fix if you do encounter this problem. You’ll want to create a wrap around the handle that makes it easier for you to hold. Here are some tips for how to wrap a walking stick handle.
Handle Length
To start, identify the part of the stick you want to wrap. It needs to be big enough that your whole hand will fit on the wrap, but you don’t want to cover too much of the stick with the wrap as it will subtract from the cane’s look. Mark off the length with tape.
Start
Lay your string or small rope from the top of the length you marked to the bottom. You should have a line of rope following the length of the stick. Now go back up and down a few times, creating several lengths of cord following the length of the stick. This will help anchor the wrap down after you finish winding.
Winding
Once you’ve finished the anchoring rope, it’s time to wrap the string around the stick. The first few winds around the stick should sit at the top and hold the anchoring stings onto the stick. Make sure that these windings are tight against the stick; there should be no give. Now that the first few are done, wind the string tightly down the entire length of the stick until you reach the bottom marking of the handle.
Tuck the End
Once you reach the bottom, slightly loosen a few of the last four to six windings. You then want to thread the rope back up these loose windings. This will help tie off the wrap and keep it in place. Once you are through the loose windings, it’s time to tighten them back up. After they are nice and tight, cut the remaining rope free from the wrapping and remove the tape. This should be the last step of the process.
These tips for how to wrap a walking stick handle should help you hold a handle no matter how badly it fit before. There are more ornate wrapping techniques to match some of the fancy walking sticks from Australia or other places, but they’re a lot more difficult to make by hand.
