A Brief History
On the third Saturday of every May, we as a nation celebrate Armed Forces Day.
President Truman wanted to commemorate all who served in the military and said “It is vital to the security of the nation and to the establishment of a desirable peace."
Truman’s Secretary of Defense wanted to combine all the days that celebrated the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force into one day - Armed Forces Day.
This single day celebrated the Armed Forces being unified, under the Department of Defense.
Armed Forces Day Facts
1. The Department of Defense is the largest employer in the United States, boasting over two million employees.
2. That being said, the largest office building in the world, the Pentagon, is run by the Department of Defense.
3. With so many employees, the Department of Defense has its share of real estate, with a portfolio of 8.8 million acres across the United States.
4. All seven continents across the globe have Department of Defense activities and presence.
5. The leaders of our great nation even served in the armed forces - 29 of them to be exact!
