How to Find Your Perfect Cane Length
Finding the correct cane length is crucial for comfort and support. To get the best fit, a cane's handle should reach the crease of your wrist when your arm is hanging at your side. Use this chart as a quick guide to find the cane length for your height.

3 Ways to Measure to Find Your Best Fit

1. Measure a Cane You Already Own
Take an existing cane that fits well and measure from the lowest part of the top of the handle to the bottom of the rubber tip. Round up to the nearest half inch.
2. Measure the Person Using the Cane
- Have the user put on their usual walking shoes.
- Have them stand naturally upright, as straight as is comfortable.
- Let their arms hang naturally at their sides with a normal, relaxed bend at the elbow (see Diagram A for correct posture).
- Using a tape measure or yardstick, measure from the wrist joint (the bottom crease of the wrist) down to the floor. Round up to the nearest half inch.
Tip: For an accurate length, have a second person read the measurement so the wrist doesn't move.
3. Estimate from the User's Height
Most users' cane length will be within one inch of half their height.
- Convert the user's height to inches and divide by two. Example: 5'6" is 66 inches, and half of 66 is 33 inches (always round up to the nearest half inch).
- Add half an inch to that number: 33 + 0.5 = 33.5 inches.
The estimated cane length for this example is 33.5 inches.

Selecting Your Size for an Adjustable Walking Cane
Adjustable walking canes fit a range of heights and adjust in 1" increments. Most adjust to fit users from 4'10" to 6'4" tall, which makes them a great choice for gifts or for anyone who wears shoes that change their height. If you are shorter than the recommended height, you can request up to 3" be removed to make the cane shorter. Check the product details for each cane's recommended user heights.
Already Have Your Cane? Size It at Home
If your cane arrived at its full length and you'd rather not send it back, you can shorten most canes yourself with a hacksaw. Follow the steps and video below.
How to Cut Your Cane to Size at Home
For wood, lucite, carbon fiber, or aluminum canes.
- Find your correct cane length using Method 2: Measure the Person Using the Cane.
- Measure your cane from the lowest part of the top of the handle to the bottom of the rubber tip (see Diagram A).
- Subtract your correct length (from step 1) from your cane's current length. The difference is how much you need to cut off.
- Remove the rubber tip with a twisting motion.
- Cut that amount off the bottom of the cane with a hacksaw or fine-tooth blade. Keep the cut straight and flat.
- Put the rubber tip back on and make sure it's secure before use.
Example: Your cane arrives at 37" and your correct length is 32". 37" − 32" = 5", so you would cut 5" off the bottom.
Please do not cut umbrella, sword, seat, or bull organ canes, or any cane marked "not to be sized." StyleStix canes with the light-up feature also cannot be cut after they're received.
Remember: canes can be shortened, but they cannot be lengthened. Measure twice, cut once.
