Is it Safe to Go for a Walk while Social Distancing?
Posted by ALEX TORRES
While daily life certainly looks somewhat different for the average citizen lately, it is important to steal away little moments of normalcy as we move forward together. Though governments all over the world have begun to issue shelter-in-place orders intended to keep everyone safe and enforce social distancing, not all areas have implemented such restrictions yet and many of those that have still allow for moderate outdoor activity for individuals. Going for a walk to clear the mind and engage the body can be highly effective in combating the anxiety that many people may be feeling amid growing concerns with public health and safety due to COVID-19.
Safety and Social Distancing
Going for a walk can still be a safe thing to do even under shelter-in-place conditions (depending on the parameters set by the jurisdiction) so long as social distancing precautions are taken. Maintaining appropriate social distance means staying at least six feet away from other people at all times. That being said, a walk down a narrow neighborhood sidewalk might not be ideal. Instead, opt for wide, open areas in nature when possible. Also, please keep in mind that walking or running in pairs or groups is NOT advisable. Being outdoors alone is much safer as it limits the potential for coming into contact with harmful germs or bacteria. When walking alone, be careful not to touch any surfaces that are likely to be handled by other people. For example, if you plan to go for a walk on a nature trail, be sure to bring your own water bottle instead of drinking from a fountain.
Walk for Calm and Clarity
Walking is a great way to find a little calm in the storm during times of stress. Going for a walk alone provides time for quiet reflection. Taking time to refresh and rejuvenate the mind can work wonders in keeping a cool and level head during difficult times. Walking, like any physical activity, helps to increase the supply of oxygen and endorphins to the brain which will often result in an instant elevation in mood. If proper safety procedures are followed, and social distance is maintained, a walk can actually be beneficial to both mental and physical health during this time.
