How To Properly Care for Your Foldable Walking Cane

Manufacturers put lots of attention and care into crafting your foldable walking cane. However, if you don’t maintain it properly, you can run the risk of damaging your cane.

Luckily, these types of canes don’t require too much extra labor to support them. Caring for your cane will prolong its life and keep it in pristine condition. With that in mind, here is how to properly care for your foldable walking cane.

Clean It Regularly

When you use folding walking sticks outdoors, dirt and grime build up quickly, especially if you are walking in the rain or snowy conditions. No matter what type of precipitation is falling outside, it makes the ground get muddy, which contaminates your cane.

After each use, dry your cane off with a towel so that debris from the outdoors doesn’t cover your cane. Many canes often come with a varnish finish or some other typing of coating. If yours does, you must occasionally polish the finish to maintain it.

You can do this with a standard shoe polish, but if your cane doesn’t come with a finish, you can clean it with a wet washcloth. For darker canes made from rosewood or ebony, a regular-colored shoe polish will do the trick for cleaning. However, don’t overdo it because you don’t want the shoe polish to get all over your clothes.

Replace Parts When the Time Is Right

Foldable walking canes feature mechanical components that make the cane more useful than regular canes. These parts often need routine replacements due to the wear and tear of everyday cane use. If you start to notice signs of wear on your cane, it’s time to replace those components before an accident takes place.

Store It Properly

When you put your cane away for the day, be sure to consider how you store it. Keeping your cane directly next to a heat source or under sunlight can damage it if you aren’t careful.

The heat warps the wood, so think twice before leaving your cane next to a hot stove. Also, double-check to ensure that your cane is folded neatly and thoroughly before you put it in a suitcase or storage device.

Canes help us in so many ways—the least we can do is maintain them properly. You can achieve this goal with flying colors now that you know how to properly care for your foldable walking cane.
